A Dismal Defeat For Clarkes 10 Man Side

Scotland Thrashed by Germany in Euro 2024 Opener

A Dismal Defeat for Clarke's 10-Man Side

Scotland were comprehensively outplayed by Germany in their Euro 2024 opener, suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat in Munich.

Steve Clarke's side were reduced to 10 men after just 23 minutes when Nathan Patterson was sent off for a reckless challenge. Germany took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with Serge Gnabry opening the scoring on the half-hour mark. Kai Havertz doubled the hosts' lead just before half-time, and Timo Werner added a third after the break.

Scotland's misery was compounded when substitute Jordan Rhodes scored an own goal, before Leroy Sane completed the rout. The defeat leaves Scotland bottom of Group F and facing an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.

Germany, meanwhile, got off to a perfect start in their quest for a record-extending fourth European Championship title. Hansi Flick's side were dominant throughout, creating numerous chances and controlling possession for long periods.

The result was a resounding statement of intent from Germany, who will now be considered one of the favorites to win the tournament. Scotland, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly if they are to have any chance of progressing from the group stage.
